Secure Retirement After the Wall Street Crash

A hard working man or woman needs 70 to 80 percent of our pre-retirement income to maintain our standard of living.

The traditional pillars of that retirement income are our basic federal social security benefits, our family’s personal savings, and our guaranteed payments from an employment pension system.

Today each pillar is under attack.

  • Wall Street players want to cut social security in the name of deficit reduction and shift to private accounts so they can make more in fees.
  • With the lack of new jobs, continued layoffs and furloughs it is tough for working families to make it, let alone to save.
  • Employers and politicians are working to cut guaranteed pensions and replace them with risky individual retirement plans.

A Secure Retirement believes the way to strengthen retirement security for all Americans is to protect all three pillars and make sure that the big banks and speculators aren’t able to crash our retirement security again.

Here are some of the facts behind the attack on retirement security:

Social Security is a major financial asset for most households – Ford Foundation Study.

Company executives benefit when private pensions are shut down – Government Accounting Office Report.

Most Americans are afraid they will never be able to retire with dignity – Employee Benefits Research Institute Survey.

Pension funding problems are the result of the economic crisis – Center for Retirement Research Report.

Public workforce compensation is less than private -- NIRS Report.

401(k) never meant to entirely fund retirement fails in crisis -- Pension Research Council Working Paper.

Principles for a strong new retirement system – Retirement USA conference Report.
